SH-Oligopeptide-78: The Copper-Binding Peptide in Atomic

Ingredient File · Peptides

SH-Oligopeptide-78 — the cysteine-site peptide.

A synthetic oligopeptide stabilized with a sulfhydryl group. The sulfur chemistry gives it affinity for damaged keratin sites — strongest on chemically processed hair.

01 · The molecule

What SH-Oligopeptide-78 is

SH-Oligopeptide-78 is a synthetic oligopeptide stabilized with a sulfhydryl group (the “SH” in the name) at the cysteine residue. The sulfhydryl group is a sulfur-hydrogen pair that gives the peptide affinity for damaged keratin sites, where similar sulfur chemistry is involved in the structural disulfide bonds that hold the hair fiber together.

The “78” is the INCI registry number, not a structural identifier — it distinguishes this particular sequence from other sulfhydryl oligopeptides.

02 · The mechanism

How it works

Damaged hair has broken disulfide bonds and exposed cysteine sites in the keratin matrix. SH-Oligopeptide-78 is structured to:

  1. Penetrate the cuticle into the cortex — the peptide is small enough to enter the fiber’s interior.
  2. Bind at damage sites — the sulfhydryl group has chemical affinity for the cysteine residues exposed when disulfide bonds break.
  3. Stabilize the local protein structure — once bound, the peptide acts as a localized reinforcement.
  4. Support copper binding — sulfhydryl peptides chelate copper ions, which can otherwise catalyze oxidative damage.

Combined effect: improved tensile strength, better moisture retention, reduced brittleness, and visible smoothness as the fiber surface recovers from damage-related raising.

Why SH-78 + Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1

Most peptide haircare brands use a single peptide. Oli G uses two, deployed together in the Atomic Hair Repair Leave-In:

  • SH-Oligopeptide-78 targets sites of disulfide damage via sulfhydryl affinity. Strongest on chemically processed hair (bleach, color, relaxer, perm).
  • Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1 targets the broader keratin matrix and supports keratin biosynthesis. Strongest on mechanical and heat damage.

Two complementary mechanisms, not two of the same molecule. The dual peptide system.

04 · Where it lives

Atomic Hair Repair Leave-In

The flagship dual peptide treatment. Applied to damp hair at pH 7.0–8.0 so the cuticle is open and accepts both peptides. Every wash, every day.

Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1 appears in four products across the system. SH-Oligopeptide-78 is concentrated in Atomic — the every-wash deposit where its sulfhydryl chemistry has the highest impact on chemically processed hair.

05 · Compatibility

Safety profile

  • Color-safe: Yes. No interaction with color or bleach chemistry post-service.
  • Bleach-safe: Yes. Often recommended starting the same day as a bleach service for damage recovery.
  • Relaxer-safe: Yes. Pair with the post-relaxer protocol (Routine for Relaxed Hair).
  • Daily use: Yes. Unlike some treatment masks, Atomic with SH-Oligopeptide-78 is designed for every wash.
